Live Edge Coffee Table

What—

A coffee table made from $6 worth of recycled material, topped with an acrylic panel.

Why—

Driven by the idea of reuse, the majority of the table’s components were purchased from a local surplus construction material non-profit.

How—

My approach for this piece was fairly open ended— since the table would rely on reuse I wanted to allow what I found to guide the design. A 9ft length of mystery wood with its bark still intact was ultimately what I was drawn to. Aluminum rods found in a studio scrap bin became turned metal standoffs, elevating the table from DIY to a more mature, designed piece.

Window—

In order to emphasize the live edge of my center piece, I chose to use a transparent top panel. This panel serves as a window— inviting viewers to peer into the piece, observing the materials natural curve and potentially highlighting the moment its bark is ultimately shed.
