One-Board Nightstand

What—

A side table made from a 10" x 60" poplar board.

Why—

This piece was a study of low-waste furniture design. How do you make the most out of a small amount of material?

How—

This table was made from a single board of poplar cut into four separate planes. The design of the table uses only 90 degree angles.

Inset Detail—

In my initial models, the energy of the inset-offset cuts traveling up the form came to an abrupt end at the most prominent plane — the tabletop. I cut a small, inset groove in order to establish continuity and maintain visual movement around the piece.
